I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t like to improve one aspect of their life or another. Some people want to be a better friend. Or be a better writer. Or be more compassionate to those in need. Even the best athletes spend time practicing and learning ways to get better. That same desire to improve can be found in practically every Teen Bible Quizzer.
Now that the quiz season is over for most of you, it is common to think, “If I start studying next year’s material now, I’ll do better next season!” But my advice to you is: Don’t do it! Take a break and recharge your batteries! Enjoy your summer. Avoid the inevitable burn-out from a non-stop grind. Quizzing is supposed to be fun, not a burden! But at the same time, you shouldn’t put on hold your daily time in the Word. Growing closer to the Lord is the one thing that everyone should be working to improve! So there must be a way to avoid burn-out and yet expose yourself to the new quiz material as part of your continuing conversation with God during the summer. Following are my 3 suggestions. Choose to do as many as you would like! Are you the kind of person who believes that you are either good or bad at something and there isn’t anything you can do about it? Do you avoid challenges to preserve your dignity from failure? Are you tired of being stuck with whatever virtues and habits you have now? Want to improve in weak areas of your life and quizzing?
Then you need the Renewed Mindset® from the Apostle Paul! (Your mileage may vary. Conditions apply. Operators are standing by. Batteries not included.) Your Mindset is one of the most significant factors that determines success or failure in anything you try to do. According to Paul in Romans 12:1-2, there are two basic Mindsets: the World Mindset and the Renewed Mindset®. By setting your mind to follow these 5 simple steps of the Renewed Mindset® methodology, you will learn that you can not only grow in character and abilities, but that God expects that you will! He designed you that way! When a task becomes routine, sometimes you need to change it up to keep everyone motivated and engaged. And unfortunately, about midway through the season, quiz practice becomes – dare I say it? – boring. Boring for the coach and boring for the quizzers.
If you are like me, you look for games to play to make mundane jobs exciting again. Jogging? Pretend there is a pack of wild dogs chasing you. Cleaning up your room? Set a timer and try to break your previous record. (The key to this one is to not play with the stuff you find!). For quiz practice, sometimes we’ll play “King of the Hill” or “Bible Baseball”. But even those get repetitive after a while. So I thought: what could we play every week that would encourage every quizzer to be actively involved, provide a different experience each time we play, cover a lot of questions, and use the quiz equipment so we can improve our jumping techniques? Our answer? A card game designed specifically for Teen Bible Quizzing. By Danae Phillips, Former LA District Teen Bible Quizzer I’ve been around quizzing virtually my entire life, and the most common problem I see with my fellow quizzers is mid-season burnout. For some reason, after all the holidays, quizzers start to drop out one by one. And for those of us who don’t drop out completely, mostly our averages drop because we don’t study as much.
If I were to ask all the quizzers who experienced the infamous burnout what happened, I imagine the majority of them would say either, “I don’t have the time anymore!” or, “I got bored.” If you really want to be involved in this program and excel in it, then you need to do something about this burnout. There’s only so much your coach can do for you! We’ve all heard it or said it: “I don’t have time to study for quizzing.” But if we don’t have time to pray and read Scriptures, we are busier than God ever intended us to be.
If you are like me, you have a lot going on. Email, phone calls, meetings, classes, conversations, driving, planning, cleaning, answering questions, and whatever else you have to accomplish fill up the most productive hours of your day. And when interruptions are the norm, productivity drops. Your day is spent playing keep-up or catch-up on a million other tasks as you try to get your to-do list down to nothing, which rarely – if ever – happens. So when Bible Quiz season comes around, how can you spend time studying and still have time for everything else? Answer: Time blocking. I am excited to let you know that a quizzing app I had the pleasure to work on with the Nazarene Publishing House has just been released!
Youth Bible Quizzing (for iOS and Android; $4.99) from the Nazarene Publishing House is a simple, easy to use resource designed for Teen Bible Quizzers and Coaches. The key features found in the app include:
Many teens express feelings of dread when they realize how many books are covered in the upcoming Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon (GEPCP) quiz season. “Five books?! Those “Book and Chapter” questions are going to be really hard!”
Seriously? That’s a lot of angst and unnecessary worry because of one question in a game. Instead, quizzers should be excited to quiz on Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. These 5 books contain only 528 verses to study. That makes GEPCP the second-shortest in terms of total verses compared to other quiz seasons. Hebrews, 1 & 2 Peter has the fewest verses with 469. Next year’s Luke has the most with 1,151! Compared to last season’s Acts, GEPCP has 48% fewer verses and 56% fewer total words to read! That’s just about half! Studying memory verses is the epitome of Teen Bible Quizzing: learning God’s Word. And as a faithful reader of this blog, you already know that quizzers who commit to learning the memory verses perform exceedingly well in competition. So if you were considering learning memory verses, this is one of the best quiz seasons to do so. Don’t pass it up! Here's why: For every “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” I could give you at least ten “Change before you have to“. In reality change is the only constant in life. But no matter how much we don’t like things to change, change is the only thing that brings progress. My opinion is that it is better to be proactive and change on your terms rather than be reactive and hastily make changes because something is broken. Fortunately, the state of Teen Bible Quizzing – and Nazarene Teen Bible Quizzing in particular – is by no means broken. It is extremely fun to play and exciting to watch! But have you ever asked yourself, “Self, what would I change about Teen Bible Quizzing to make this wonderful ministry even better?” Obviously I have. I even came up with a concise, 3-bullet point answer perfectly formatted for quick consumption as a blog post (what a coincidence!): Looking for an iOS app that knows how to keep score for Nazarene Teen Bible Quizzing? Let me save you some time: there isn’t one!
Until now, the closest work-around I’ve found is to upload a picture or PDF of the official score sheet and use a PDF-markup app (such as Notability or Skitch) to “write” down the scores. However, this requires you to know the scoring rules and recognize when you need to apply them. Also, when I coach I keep track of how many questions of each type remain in the game to help me make time-out or substitution decisions. I could doodle my shorthand tracking table for this task on the PDF-markup app, but the real estate left over is too small to draw with my finger. Since creating an app to do this is a bit out of my skill-set for now (yes, I am looking at you, Keith Smith!), I have found a useful alternative: Numbers for iOS. Numbers is a spreadsheet app (much like Microsoft Excel) that most iPad owners can get for free. In Numbers I built Nazarene TBQ score sheets that will calculate the following for you: |
